The basic idea of a one-piece, anatomically shaped seat shell occupied the designer couple Charles and Ray Eames for many years. In the 1940s they came across fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin in their search for suitable materials. After the first presentation at the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition of the Museum of Modern Art in 1948, the plastic bowls with armrests (A-shell) and the simple seating shells (S-shell) were launched in 1950 - the first mass-produced plastic chairs in furniture history.
